March Into Reading: Bringing Families Together Through Learning

At the Thomasville Community Resource Center, we believe that learning doesn’t stop when the school day ends — and it doesn’t happen in isolation. Some of the most meaningful growth happens when families and children learn together.

That’s exactly what made our recent “March Into Reading & Growing Minds” Parent Night at Varnedoe so special.

A Night Focused on Growth, Creativity, and Connection

Families gathered for an evening designed to support early literacy while creating space for connection, encouragement, and fun. The event welcomed children ages 2 through 2nd grade and offered a variety of hands-on activities that made learning feel exciting and accessible.

Throughout the evening, students and parents explored:

  • Grade-level reading stations that encouraged confidence and skill-building
  • Sight word and alphabet bingo to reinforce foundational literacy in a fun, engaging way
  • Parent and child canvas painting, creating shared moments of creativity
  • Affirmation poster creation, helping children build confidence and positive self-talk

These activities weren’t just about learning — they were about building relationships between parents and children, and reinforcing that education can be both meaningful and enjoyable.

Creating Moments That Matter

One of the highlights of the evening was simply watching families engage together — reading side by side, celebrating small wins, and encouraging one another.

And of course, no great community event is complete without a little fun. The Ice Cream Girl joined us for the evening, adding a sweet treat that made the night even more memorable for our students.

Why Family Engagement Matters

Events like Parent Night play a critical role in student success. When families are actively involved in learning:

  • Children build stronger reading and comprehension skills
  • Confidence increases both at home and in the classroom
  • Parents feel more connected to their child’s education
  • Learning becomes a shared, positive experience

At TCRC, we see firsthand how these moments translate into long-term growth.

Building Strong Readers — Together

“March Into Reading” is more than just an event — it reflects our commitment to early literacy, family engagement, and whole-child development.

We are grateful to every family who joined us and made the evening so impactful. Your involvement is what helps our students grow into confident, capable learners.
